For AWD , they put a sniffer in the tailpipe, and hook it up to the computer, and test at idle and high rpm (2k maybe?) The computers are hooked up directly to the DMV, so there is really no way around it. You can get a "test run" to see if you will pass. There are two types of smog stations "test only" and regular. "test only" stations cannot perform any repairs, only do tests. I believe that re-tests at either type of station is at no additional charge.
It used to be that if your vehicle required more than $500 in repairs you could get a waiver, but I don't know if that is still the case. All in all it is a PITA, but such is the price for clean air and living in paradise...(flame suit on and ready!)
